What is the advantage of a rebuilt outdrive

Remanufactured stern drives are assembled with new OEM gears & bearings, and new or reconditioned housings and shafts. Our remanufactured Sterndrives have been remanufactured/reconditioned free from defects in materials and rebuilt by skilled marine technicians. These are usually significantly cheaper then purchasing a brand new outdrive. Most drives are available as a remanufactured version. Rebuilt Omc Outdrives, Rebuilt Volvo outdrives, and rebuilt Mercruiser stern drives. The one key here is to be sure you know whom you’re dealing with as some companies are less than honest about their outdrives. I have seen companies claim they hand rebuilt and re-manufactured, however it is likely just a sales tactic. It is unlikely they would replace all the parts with brand new ones as those parts exceeded what they were charging. So if it sounds too good to be true, it likely is. I have also seen the big boys like West Marine and Crowley delivered there drives in piece meaning the upper and lower were not already assembled. This causes you to either spend more time installing it and also means that some parts are separate so they seem more competitive.

I found this great boats forum that gives great advice on boat issues and problems.    They talk about stuff like rebuilt Sterndrives and marine parts. Which is a professional re-manufactured out drive from the case up with OEM Merc parts or equivalent where required.

The drive unit (outdrive) carries power from the inboard engine, typically mounted above the waterline, outboard through the transom and downward to the propeller below the waterline.

The outdrive resembles the bottom half of an outboard motor and is composed of two sub-units: an upper containing a driveshaft connected through the transom to an engine which transmits power to a 90-degree-angle gearbox; and the lower containing a vertical driveshaft receiving power from the upper unit gearbox, transmitted through another 90-degree-angle gearbox to the propeller shaft.

The boat is steered by pivoting the outdrive, as on an outboard motor; no rudder is needed. The outdrive is pivoted up for trailer travel and between uses to avoid fouling.

The outdrive can be matched with a variety of engines in the appropriate power range; upper and lower units can often be purchased separately to customize gear ratios and propeller RPM, and lower units are also available with counter-rotating gearing to provide balanced torque in dual-drive installations.

Sterndrive engines are similar to those used in true inboard systems. Historically the most popular in North America were "marinised" versions of Chevrolet and Ford V-8 automotive engines. In Europe diesel engines are more popular, ranging up to 400 hp in models such as the Volvo PentaD6A-400.

Now, you could just take the tact of hoping that you get what you pay for, but RVs are notorious for requiring lots of service and repair, even a lot of the expensive models. We visited several different RV forums online to hear what owners had to say about the RVs they own. RV owners are generally pretty quick to let people know when they have had problems. We also talked to owners firsthand. That helped eliminate a lot of RVs right away. We also watched a lot of RV videos on YouTube. That’s where I found this one. It does seem that the Lifestyle is built to a higher standard in terms of engineering and the components and appliances they’ve installed. Actually, we were so impressed with what we saw and heard, we went to a dealership to look at one. We were immediately impressed by the way this thing was built. The quality really showed. But what really did it for us was talking to guy who owned the dealership. His first question to us was how much time did we have? I told him we could spend all day if needed and that’s just about how long we stayed. He knew these vehicles inside and out. He also knew how the completion builds their RVs. By the time we were done, it was no contest. Lifestyle Luxury RVs are not cheap, but it was clear to us that they are in a league of their own in terms of luxury and quality. We are going back to that little dealership in South Fork to buy ours at the end of July.
